Planning our banner - gathering our thoughts - 21st May, 2019


Today we chatted through everything we had done on the project since last September.  Unfortunately, Chloe, Lexie and Travis were away on a trip but the rest of us reminded ourselves where we had been on our trips and what we have learned about Carlisle's textile industries two hundred years ago.  We focused on what our area of West Cumbria and Whitehaven contributed to the textile industries in Carlisle, transporting by ship and latterly by train the coal to fuel the factories and the raw materials such as raw cotton to the spinning and weaving mills.

We particularly enjoyed our visits to Farfield Mill, The Beacon Museum, Lowther Castle and our trips to Carlisle to meet our friends in the Creative Conversations group.






We sketched and made notes of our favourites then collected our thoughts altogether. 

The walls in our room are covered in our fabulous art and after half term, we shall be deciding what to include on our work for our exhibitions in Carlisle and Whitehaven Libraries and working on these until we finish in July.

Hubert has missed the last session as he was taking his SATS but we shall be doing more printing on fabric soon.  He did however work really hard on finishing a drawing he and Evan had drawn of a slave ship - including everything in the hold that would have been carried on the middle passage - slaves, guns and gunpowder. 


 Well done Hubert - it is an amazing drawing.

David Ramshaw - Carlisle Canal

Today  26th February,  David Ramshaw, writer, publisher and local historian joined us at Prism Arts, Carlisle where we met up again with participants from the Creative Conversations group. David told us about transport in the early part of the 19th Century as part of our research in uncovering the history of Carlisle's Textile Industry. We learned that factories in Carlisle were powered by water initially - there was a large furnace for example under Dixon's Chimney turning water into steam and energy to power the factory.  This  was the biggest in Europe at the time.  Although as we know from our research into Whitehaven and the Lowther family there was plenty coal in West Cumbria, there was no way then of bringing this to Carlisle's factories - roads were poor and pack horses were used to carry goods relevant to local trade. This problem had been resolved in other parts of Britain by the use of canals.  A plan in 1795 looked at building a canal from Count

Busy! Busy time! - 25th June, 2019

 School is very busy as only a few weeks until the end of term.  We are working on all the pieces that will come together to form our banner.  Even time to print!...... We have our design and we have identified what we need to include that is unique to where we live and the history of  the textile industry 200 years ago.    Aneasha finished her textile drawing of Carlisle Basin, showing the Castle and chimneys in the distance - well done everyone.
